Soldier Killed In Afghanistan When Insurgents Throw Bomb Over Base Wall

Army Pfc. Shane W. Cantu, 20, died August 28, in Charkh, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by shrapnel from an explosion, according to the Department of Defense.

Cantu was assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

The Detroit Free Press reports Cantu, a Michigan native, was killed when a bomb thrown over a base wall by insurgents exploded.

Cantu had been in Afghanistan just a month when he died, according to the Free Press.
