Strong rip currents and higher than normal surf are expected along the northern San Diego County coast starting Wednesday, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement for areas north of Solana Beach due to the rip currents and 3- to 5-foot surf. Strong long-shore currents are also expected.
The advisory will remain in effect until Thursday evening.
The surf and currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions, especially for those with little experience in the water, according to the weather service. Beachgoers were advised to obey posted warning signs, use caution in and around the water and to swim near a lifeguard.
Forecasters said surf heights would decrease by Friday, but the rip current threat would stick around into the weekend.
