Rain, Isolated Thunderstorms Expected In Most Of San Diego County

High surf, strong rip currents continue

Rain and isolated thunderstorms were expected to develop Monday in most of San Diego County as high surf and strong rip currents continue to bedevil the coast.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., an isolated thunderstorm centered south of Dulzura was producing brief but heavy rainfall and small hail and was slowly moving north, according to the National Weather Service. Isolated showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the coastal areas, the valleys and the mountains.

Cooler weather, rain and thunderstorms could continue as a weak low pressure system off the Southern California coast moves inland throughout the day, forecasters said.

Along the coast, 6- to 10-foot surf with sets of up to 12 feet were expected north from Oceanside, along with potentially dangerous rip currents, as a pair of 4-foot long-period south-southwest swells continue to affect the area. Forecasters said 5- to 8-foot surf would be likely between Point Loma and La Jolla.

A high surf advisory will remain in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday.

"The largest surf will occur along the southwest facing beaches of Orange County and northern San Diego County," according to the weather service. "Powerful rip and longshore currents as well as beach erosion are also expected."

Forecasters warned that the large surf and rip currents would cause "extremely dangerous swimming conditions," and discouraged swimmers from entering the water. The waves may also be powerful enough to sweep those close to the water off their feet or off jetties.

The waves may also wash over sea walls and cause minor to moderate beach erosion and some minor tidal flooding in low-lying areas, according to the weather service.
