Crews Fight Small Fire Along I-15 Near Riverside-San Diego County Line

The fire had been 100 percent contained at 12 acres as of Monday evening, according to Cal Fire.

Cal Fire said the Checkpoint fire is holding at 10 acres and is 25 percent contained. Structures are no longer threatened.

On the freeway front, one northbound lane on Interstate 15 remains closed. Authorities will reevaluate at 8 p.m. whether to keep it closed.

All but one of the northbound lanes on Interstate 15 near the Border Patrol checkpoint near Temecula were open as firefighters worked to put out a brush fire, according to Caltrans. Initially they were all closed. The closure caused a major traffic backup for those heading north toward Riverside County.

Cal Fire in Riverside put the acreage burned in the Checkpoint fire at 10 acres. Several golf carts and a storage shed were damaged, fire officials said.

A firefighter also was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Cal Fire.

A series of small spot fires led to the closure Monday afternoon of all lanes on northbound Interstate 15 near the Border Patrol checkpoint at the county line for Riverside and San Diego, according to Caltrans in San Diego.

Cal Fire in Riverside County said firefighters were working to stamp out the six to seven fires that broke out about 2 p.m. on the shoulder of I-15 in the unincorporated area south of Temecula.

Crews were also going to the Temecula Creek Inn to protect it from the flames.
