Compensation hearing held for wrongly convicted man

The state attorney general's office says a San Diego man who spent 21 years in prison is innocent. A jury had convicted Kenneth Marsh for the murder of his girlfriend's young son. A hearing was held today to determine whether he should be compensated for the time he spent in prison. KPBS Reporter Amita Sharma has more.

The attorney general's office had initially opposed awarding Marsh 100 dollars for each of the 7,500 days he spent in prison on grounds that the evidence did not prove Marsh was innocent.

But after a victim's compensation hearing this week in Sacramento, a representative from the attorney general's office said Marsh had met his burden of proof.

Marsh's lawyer Donny Cox says the attorney general's reversal is the first step in helping his client put his life back together. However, Marsh won't be compensated immediately because the attorney general's opinion is only advisory. The victim compensation board still has to decide the matter and forward its recommendation to the legislature for approval. Amita Sharma, KPBS News.
