Locally-Based Wireless Company Leaping Across County

A San Diego County-based wireless network company has been expanding throughout the country. Now, Leap Wireless plans to add cell phone service in San Diego. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

While Leap’s brand name Cricket cell phone service has long been available in other parts of the U.S., San Diegans haven’t been able to use it. That changes by December, when the company rolls out service in San Diego County. Fernando Corona heads up the company’s southwest division. He says at least 100 new workers will be hired as part of the expansion:

Corona: It’s a full-build out that not only encompasses our own network but also encompasses retail outlets of which we’ll have our own company-owned stores and agents throughout the county.”

Leap Wireless has 1900 employees, with 250 now working in San Diego. The company’s Cricket service targets a low-income niche market. Customers aren’t required to pass credit checks or sign long-term contracts. The stock price recently hit a new 52-week high. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
