Matt Rogers is a pastor at New Life Christian Fellowship in Blacksburg, Va. It's one of the recognized student ministries at Virginia Tech. Monday night he opened his doors to about 200 students for a prayer vigil.
Rogers said people were in a state of shock and responded to the trauma by praying and hugging. He counseled the people gathered together with reading from Romans: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Rogers amplified that message with his own words.
"It won't help if we respond from bitterness, or hate, or anger, as understandable as those feelings may be," he said. "We really need to try to respond from a heart of love, and just serve the people who are hurting the most right now."
