The Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court has reacted to President Donald Trump’s executive orders regarding immigration.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye does not take a position on the President’s recent orders, but she acknowledges they hastened an action this week. The state’s top judge has called for courts to provide immigrants who must access the legal system with new guidance and resources … developed through a working group.
"I’d been thinking about the working group since early January, decided on where I thought the court could be philosophically, I thought how do we proceed," Says Cantil-Sakauye. "And then, the series of issues came up regarding the President’s actions. What that has caused is me wanting to move faster on the concept.
Cantil-Sakauye likens it to a civics education initiative she has pushed as the head of the state’s courts. This one would help immigrants find the correct federal courts and learn how to access them—as well as pro bono organizations and even attorneys.
