Leucadia-based mixed media artist Roy Jenuine hosts an exhibit – "Roy Jenuine: Modern Folk Art" – in Solana Beach, showcasing a lifetime of work from 1978 through today. Jenuine has spent his life’s work blending wood, photography and found materials to create artful masterpieces spanning functional furniture to mixed-media assemblage. Following the opening party, which is open to the public, the gallery will be open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jenuine’s work explores materials, finishes, and craftsmanship, as well as observations about his surroundings. He finds humor in the everyday, captures nostalgia, pushes the boundaries of function and form. He aligns himself with folk art and architecture, addressing both complex modernist aesthetics and found elements from the salvage yard. Drawing from his childhood in Los Angeles, early 1970s residency at the radical architectural project "Arcosanti", and formal training at San Diego State University, Jenuine has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary that is rigorous, fun, meditative and truly original. Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our namesake waterway. Without our amazing volunteers, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and wash out into our ocean and beaches! The History of Black Baseball in San Diego Presentation by Bill Swank The Negro League Baseball Museum’s exhibit “Breaking Barriers” is adjacent to the Baseball Research Center. Of the more than 50 panels included in the exhibit, two deal with San Diego’s Johnny Ritchey and his role in “breaking barriers.” The narrative in the Ritchey panels was written by Swank. While Ritchey’s role was notable, the history of Black baseball in San Diego started at the turn of the last century. Swank has written about the subject in several books that cover baseball history in San Diego from the 1870s through to the current Padres. No one knows the subject better. The program is sponsored by the San Diego Ted Williams Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Admission is free, and open to non-members. Join Outside The Lens for the final exhibition of "Land + Lenses," a youth-led community arts program that explores identity, land, and belonging through photography and mixed media. Featuring original works by seven youth apprentices and community participants, this event is a reflection of their creative journey since February—complete with interactive art-making, live music, food, and guided gallery tours. Junior Over The Line The Junior Over the Line Tournament is an annual event that brings together young athletes from across the region to compete in the exciting Over the Line (OTL) sport. This unique 3-player softball type game is open to junior players of all skill levels, allowing beginners to learn the game and experienced players to showcase their talents. The Junior Over the Line Tournament participants can look forward to a day of fun in the sun, filled with laughter, excitement, and the thrill of competition. The chance to test their skills against teams from different backgrounds adds an element of adventure. Event Information Junior Over-The-Line® is a unique 3-player softball type game played on sand. The play area is marked out using rope and staked into the ground in a triangle pattern. Each team pitches to its players. The key rule is to hit a softball-type ball over the line to effect a hit, with 3 hits resulting in a run. Notably, there is no running of bases, making it a distinctive and exciting game. Junior OTL is played the same way adult Over-The-Line is. The difference is court size. The peewee division is co-ed and played on a 35′ court, using a safety softball and hitting off a tee. For ages 9-11 and 12-14, the court size is 45′, and it uses a standard OTL ball and pitching. All other divisions use standard-sized courts, balls, and pitching. Gloves are allowed for all divisions except the 18-20-year-old boys division. Round-robin formats are used, with 4 to 5 teams per court. Due to single-elimination play, awards are given to 1st—and 2nd-place teams.
