Traversing the bounds of genre and language in his songs, Omar Apollo captures the adventurous spirit that this multi-hyphenate moment in pop demands. The singer-songwriter’s fluid musical flair, coupled with his soul-baring balladry, has garnered him a number of industry accolades: including a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist and two Latin GRAMMY nominations for Record of the Year and Best Alternative Song (“Te Olvidaste,” with C. Tangana). With the release of Ivory, Apollo’s eclectic 2022 debut, his hit single “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me at All)” was certified platinum and became his first showing on the Billboard Hot 100. After selling out his accompanying headline tour, and playing arenas with SZA, Billie Eilish and Daniel Caesar, Apollo is now prepared to release his highly-anticipated sophomore album, God Said No, June 28th 2024. Born in Hobart, IN to Mexican immigrant parents, Apollo made the most of his outcast status by learning guitar and studying the works of Prince. Released independently and written in Spanglish, his 2018 EP Stereo, followed by 2019’s Friends, scored him a deal with Warner Records in 2019. The deal yielded two more projects: 2020’s Apolonio and 2023’s Live for Me. Blending techniques he learned from R&B, indie rock and Latin music, Apollo continued to flex his versatility in sensational live performances, including on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, NPR’s Tiny Desk series and Coachella. Prolific novelist and punk rock journalist and historian Jim Ruland has a new novel coming out, "Make It Stop," a speculative look at a dysfunctional capitalist healthcare system and the underdogs, vigilantes and avengers who are (messily) trying to upturn the status quo. Ruland's writing is a compelling mix of page turner thriller, humor and cerebral, wry insight into the darker corners of the human condition. Kevin will be in-conversation with local author and KPBS arts producer, Julia Dixon Evans. On a sunny day in a business park near Portland, Oregon, 42-year-old web developer Kevin Maloney is in the throes of an existential crisis that finds him shoeless in a field of Queen Anne’s lace, reflecting on the tumultuous events that brought him to this moment. Growing up in the suburbs, young Kevin suffered “a psychological break that ripped me from my humdrum existence” mainlining high fructose corn syrup and episodes of The Golden Girls. Thus begins a journey of hard-earned insights and sexual awakening that takes Kevin from angst-ridden Beaverton to the beaches of San Diego, a frontier-themed roadside attraction in Helena, Montana, and a hermetic shack on an organic lettuce farm. Everything changes when Kevin falls in love with Wendy. After a chance tarot reading lands them on the frigid coast of Maine, their lives are unsettled by the birth of their daughter, Zoë, whose sudden presence is oftentimes terrifying, frequently disturbing, and yet - miraculously - always wondrous. The Red-Headed Pilgrim is an irresistible novel of misadventure and new beginnings, of wanderlust and bad decisions, of parenthood and divorce, and of the heartfelt truths we unearth when we least expect it. About "A HISTORY OF FEAR" The Devil is in Scotland. Grayson Hale, the most infamous murderer in Scotland, is better known by a different name: the Devil’s Advocate. The twenty-five-year-old American grad student rose to instant notoriety when he confessed to the slaughter of his classmate Liam Stewart, claiming the Devil made him do it. When Hale is found hanged in his prison cell, officers uncover a handwritten manuscript that promises to answer the question that’s haunted the nation for years: was Hale a lunatic, or had he been telling the truth all along? Unnervingly, Hale doesn’t fit the bill of a killer.
