San Diego City Council voted last night to go ahead with a new bridge on Regents' Road in Rose Canyon. It would link north and south University City. The bridge has been planned for almost 50 years and hundreds of people showed up at city hall to argue for and against the project. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The council voted 6 to 2 in favor the bridge after hours of heated public testimony. Environmentalists like Michael Beck of the Endangered Habitats League said the $36 million bridge will have irreversible effects on one of the last pieces of open space left in the city

BECK: "This is a sad debate we're having her we are fighting over the scraps that remain there's very, very little left."

But supporters like former city councilman Harry Matthis said the bridge is essential to ease traffic congestion.

Matthis: "For 47 years we've been planning for a bridge parallel to Genesee at Regents, and for 25 years the city has been connecting fees to pay for it. I urge you - build a bridge like we were promised."

Councilwomen Donna Fry and Toni Atkins were the two dissenting votes. Alison St John KPBS News.
