National Guard Humvees and emergency vehicles are virtually the only cars remaining in the town of Los Alamos, New Mexico today, where wildfires have consumed almost 93 square miles, according to Forbes. The fires prompted the evacuation of more than 12,000 Los Alamos residents. The New Mexico National Guard has been active in helping with evacuations and providing equipment and support to aid the fire fight.
As Home Post reported yesterday, officials evacuated the Los Alamos National Laboratory as the fire approached. Los Alamos is one of only two nuclear labs in the United States. (The other is Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California.) Kevin Smith, Los Alamos Site Office manager, told Forbes:
According to its website, the Los Alamos National Laboratory will remain closed until Wednesday.
