U.N. Official: Humanitarian Crisis Looms in Gaza

Israel has released some Palestinian prisoners in an effort to boost Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has a new government in the West Bank. But Israel has kept Gaza sealed off, now that Gaza is run by Hamas, and United Nations officials warn that a humanitarian crisis is in the making.

Sir John Holmes, the U.N.'s emergency relief coordinator, says U.N. agencies are gearing up to feed all Gazans, even distributing flour via conveyor belts to get over closed border crossings. Holmes says it's an unsustainable situation.

Gaza isn't his only challenge these days. Holmes says he's also worried about Chad, Darfur and other complicated aid efforts around the world.
