Sibyl Rubottom presents a visual memoir of her work from the last six decades, blending exploration with inspiration and comprising a variety of mediums: paintings, etchings, prints, artist books, collages, and soft sculpture. Central to her collection are artists books, her primary focus for over 25 years. She describes her work as “connecting folk traditions with a broad gamut of sensibilities, melding the boundaries between poetry and image making.” Sibyl’s books dive into concepts ranging from the celestial to the alphabetical. Her most enduring theme is water and its power to transport us across time and space—whether immersed in it or simply observing it. Sibyl Rubottom holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. The exhibition can be viewed in the AAC Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center (1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113) during open hours, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every second Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., during the Barrio Art Crawl, and by appointment. Artist, educator and printmaker Sibyl Rubottom will retire from her role at the Athenaeum Art Center's Print Studio. To celebrate Rubottom's long career, a survey of the last six decades of her work is currently on view.

Note: This exhibition was taken down two weeks early. "Text Me When You Get Home" is a new solo exhibition by border artist Diana Benavidez, and will be on view Mar. 12 through May 13, 2022. About the exhibition: Text Me When You Get Home explores habits and rituals adopted by women against lurking predators in public spaces. This collection of piñatas investigates objects transformed into self-defense weapons and addresses common practices embraced on a daily basis as a form of protection against sexual harassment and violence. Her art practice explores piñata-making as a method of expression and storytelling. Diana builds piñatas that reflect upon her experiences growing up along the border, her identity, and culture. Her work is known for introducing materials not commonly found in traditional piñatas including media and technology. Diana received a BA in Visual Arts from UC San Diego and her art has been exhibited in Mexico, Canada, and the US. From the gallery: An art project inspired by Baja California & San Diego topography, representing the 5 topographic and climate regions: Beach(Coastal Prairie), Coastal, Inland, Mountain, and Dessert. Each zone provides flavors unique to the Baja California / SD region. The entire project is designed to go the bring experiences of our regional landscape to all our senses. The food is meant to be held, felt, smelled, and tasted. Music is made by the modules of sounds that directly simple from the climate zone. Augmented Reality is used to reflect new way of sharing food under the recent social norms.
