Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary - a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy. This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try out field work, connect with fellow nature lovers, make a meaningful difference for a critical and fragile ecosystem, and explore the beautiful estuary habitat! We’d love to see you there! At the same time, the education team will also be promoting our Outdoor Education Field Trip programs. We offer free, nature-focused STEM field trips that encourage students to explore and learn about the significance of the San Diego River through hands-on activities, experiments, and games. Lucas Smith, celebrated award-winning artist is presenting a “Retrospective” solo exhibition from June 4 – June 30 in the Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery of the San Carlos Branch Library. Lucas has brought a fresh perspective to abstract art, blending imagination, raw materials and refined techniques to create pieces that invite viewers on a journey of exploration. This show is a retrospective collection of his personal favorites from prior series and key moments along his artistic growth journey. Lucas is the resident artist of Studio 2 at Art on 30th in North Park, San Diego. In the past year, his work has been juried in dozens of shows in some of San Diego County’s best galleries and awarded Best of Show, two 1st place, two 2nd place, 3rd place, Juror’s Choice, three Honorable Mentions and People’s Choice. Lucas is a member of Carlsbad Oceanside Art League, San Diego Watercolor Society, OMA Artist Alliance, Sergeant Art Group, Foothills Art Association, and the San Diego Museum of Art. He currently serves as the Assistant Director of the SDWS 45th International Exhibition and devotes his energy to commissioned creations and continued maturity of his artistic vision and voice. From August 1-3, Old Town’s iconic Bazaar del Mundo Shops will present its Latin American Market, transforming its courtyard into a small marketplace with genuine folk art, handwoven textiles, stunning jewelry and meticulously crafted ceramic and clay pottery made by “The Best of the Best.” This is an opportunity for guests to take a timeless piece of culture, tradition and history home, and enjoy live demonstrations, Latin guitar serenades and award-winning Mexican cuisine from neighboring Casa Guadalajara. For designers, creatives, and the general public interested in natural color in textiles and its possible modifications. Learn from the experts! This class is led by Mildred and Sama Barrios, who run a Mexico-based natural color studio called SUULA. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of modifying natural color. In the realm of natural dyeing, modifiers involve the partial or total application of substances such as vinegar, iron oxide, and baking soda, among others, to fabric dyed with natural dyes. This process alters the tone of the dye, allowing for a wider variety of colors or the creation of patterns and designs on the fabric. Some dyes react more strongly than others to these modifiers.
