Join us for Studio Arts, when OMA transforms into an artist’s studio, offering skill-building workshops led by distinguished professor and arts educator Robin Douglas. “Expansive Paintings” Using huge painting tools including brooms, mops, sponges and scrapers loose and dynamic large-format paintings will be created on the floor and table tops. Multi-layered colors will be used to create a soak-and-stain effect on loose canvases. A break for lunch and a relaxed discussion will occur at midday. Art Within Social Movements: Integrating Art & Ethnic Studies This professional development session explores the powerful role visual art has played in advancing social movements throughout history, equipping educators with resources, examples, and art projects that align with the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum theme of Social Movements and Equity. Participants will examine how art has amplified the voices of advocates and driven social change, analyzing both historical and contemporary examples. Designed for all educators, not just art teachers, this session provides adaptable lesson plans and classroom-ready projects that support Ethnic Studies Learning Outcomes across various subjects. Educators will leave with practical tools, meaningful connections, and strategies to inspire student engagement with themes of equity and justice. All content is aligned with the National Core Arts Standards, ensuring a seamless integration of art into diverse educational contexts. “'The Space Between': Texture Studies by Denja Harris explores the tension between control and surrender, seeking meaning in the space between what is and what is becoming. Through large-scale yarn paintings, soft sculptures, and video, I investigate how texture, form, color, and pattern evoke sensory and emotional responses. Each piece invites viewers to engage with the interplay of softness and structure and to find significance within the undefined spaces. This work mirrors our collective human experience, an ongoing navigation of uncertainty, patience, and becoming. In this way, absence holds as much weight as presence. This exhibition is about approaching the unknown with curiosity rather than resistance and using improvisation as both an initiation and a response. Layering and repetition are prominent throughout my work, reinforcing the cyclical nature of change and the unfolding process of becoming. Michael Roque Collins Corpus Sanctum May 31 - July 26, 2025 Opening Reception: Saturday, May 31, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Artist Talk: Saturday, May 31, 5 p.m. LOS/NR is thrilled to present a solo retrospective show of accomplished artist Michael Roque Collins and his most impactful works created between 1990 to 2000. This period was pivotal in the evolution of his art practice from a photorealistic water media-based practice to large scale expressionistic, symbolist works in impasto oil paint, imbuing ominous, apocalyptic and other-worldly scenes of imaginary landscapes, reflecting a tumultuous time of his own personal growth and change. Collins’ work perfectly displays the idea that the body is the temple of the spirit, the being as a whole doesn’t deny but embraces and develops the unseen aspects of existence.
