"Access" is a group exhibition featuring material and conceptual works by multidisciplinary artists Carolina Danu, Yena Kim, Nanzi Muro, and Gabrielle Berens. "Access" includes MFA students from San Diego State University who believe in the need for diversity in the arts. Through printmaking, textiles, ceramics, digital graphics, illustrations, paintings, and woven sculpture, the selected works celebrate the evolving practices of these emerging artists and will serve to inspire the possibilities of material expression. The title of the exhibition, "Access," represents access to arts education, access to facilities, access to community, as well as access to expression through a variety of media and materials. San Diego Civic Youth Ballet presents the 17th Annual "Fairy Tales in the Park" at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park on August 16 & 17. A whimsical, interactive dance experience for families and audiences of all ages, this beloved tradition is directed by SDCYB Artistic Director Danika Pramik-Holdaway and narrated by a professional storyteller. Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty bring to life Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a young dreamer with a big imagination—Jojo. Narrated by the mischievous Cat in the Hat, the story follows Horton as he discovers a speck of dust containing the Whos, including Jojo, a child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” As Horton protects the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, he also cares for an abandoned egg left behind by the carefree Mayzie La Bird. Though faced with ridicule, peril, and even a trial, Horton remains steadfast—with Gertrude McFuzz by his side, never losing faith in him. This exhibition showcases how local Filipino cuisine has evolved from humble beginnings to a celebrated culinary movement. It highlights how immigrant and American born children have become leading chefs, brewers, and entrepreneurs in San Diego, elevating Filipino flavors in bold new ways while staying grounded in family tradition. More than an exhibition, "Taste San Diego: Filipino Culinary Journeys" will offer visitors an evolving menu of Filipino food and beverage tastings from local vendors, available for purchase on the weekends (Saturday & Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) Please note: The San Diego History Center is closed on July 4. Create your own handmade ceramic pottery! Mondays, July 21, 28, August 4, 11, 25 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week class, instructor Lydia Kardos will teach the basics of handbuilding to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with glazes. Students will complete various projects throughout the course, learning the basics of clay materials and handbuilding — skills necessary to work independently in open studio. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors. All materials provided.
