She is also a Professor of Music at Palomar College, where she has been on the faculty since 2000. Some recent compositions include Running and Reflection (composed for the Heartland Marimba Quartet), Flow (For the New York Composers Circle), and Awakening (Cal Poly Pomona Piano Ensemble, directed by Nadia Schpachenko). From the Tony® and Grammy® award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater, and Duncan Sheik, and co-written by Jessie Nelson (Waitress), Alice by Heart is a touching musical inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. As they travel through the tale, Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This world-premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times. This Week’s Performing Arts Will Be Located in Performance Lab D -10 Paul Tseng and Ching-Ming Cheng **Paul Tseng (cello) has performed in venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Cairo Royal Opera House. He holds a master’s and bachelor’s Degree from Juilliard, and a Doctorate from the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University specializing in Prokofiev’s cello music. Paul has served as principal cellist for various professional orchestras and holds degrees from the Juilliard School. He has taught in multiple colleges and while performing as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist. As a founding member of the Logos Trio and artistic director of the San Diego Music Society, he oversees the Music by the Sea Concert Series in Encinitas, CA and the Intimate Classics Concert Series at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Dr. Ching-Ming Cheng (piano) professor and chair of the Music Department at CSU San Marcos, has been recognized with the Top Music Teacher Award from Steinway & Sons annually since 2016 and was inducted into their Teacher Hall of Fame in 2023. Originally from Taiwan, she began playing piano at five and has won several competitions, including a silver medal in the International Keyboard Odyssiad Piano Competition. Dr. Cheng holds degrees from National Taiwan Normal University and the University of Miami. An active performer, she has toured internationally and performed with various symphonies. She is also a dedicated faculty member, helping to expand the music department at CSUSM and establishing the first All-Steinway School in the region. The governing body for California high school sports has changed its competition rules for this weekend's state track-and-field championship.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, one of California's most treasured beachfront resorts for almost 88 years, will host the 136th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championship, Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2, 2025. Many of the top NCAA Men's college teams in the country are expected to compete, including: Ball State University Bucknell University Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Pepperdine University Pomona-Pitzer Rice University San Diego State University UC Davis UC Los Angeles UC San Diego University of San Diego University of Southern California Villanova University (Entry List Subject to Change) Also entering this tournament will be top teaching pros, promising junior players, college coaches and former tour players, making this one of the most interesting and unusual competitor fields in the country. “We are very happy to host the top collegiate tennis players in the country for the 136th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship,” said Bill Kellogg, Tournament Director and President of La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. “This year’s tournament will feature a strong field of teams which includes USC, UCLA and Pepperdine, along with local teams from University of San Diego, San Diego State University and UC San Diego.” Named one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in 1942. The tournament is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include some on the greatest names in tennis, including Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston and John McEnroe. Yang Jiang (b. 1988, China) is a San Diego–based artist and therapist whose tactile and dreamlike creations embody emotional liberation and spiritual freedom. Shimmering like artifacts from a fairy tale, her pieces use light, texture, and sculptural forms to convey a sense of vulnerability and resilience. A testament to the beauty and complexity of spiritual survival, Jiang’s work offers viewers a poignant reminder of the courage and tenderness of the human heart. Her art has been exhibited at the Athenaeum Art Center, Visual Art + Supply, Revision San Diego, and the Brown Building. Jiang is a graduate of Wellesley College and the University of San Diego. I Thought I’d Be Braver, Jiang’s debut solo exhibition, is a decade-long chronicle of her journey toward emotional courage. Her early work, characterized by bold colors and harsh textures, reflects the pain of repressed emotions and a fear of vulnerability. Gradually, this aesthetic softens into one of sheer, vibrant hues and delicate layers, mirroring her internal shift toward nurturance, forgiveness, and compassion. This evolution in her style reflects the brave heart of a wounded healer who has confronted her shadow and embraced self-acceptance, demonstrating that true courage lies in acknowledging and integrating one’s emotions. The exhibition can be viewed in the Catherine and Robert Palmer Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center (1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113) during open gallery hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every second Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., during the Barrio Art Crawl, and by appointment.
