Join us for a celebration of the glorious reunification of the Polish Jewish Republic. “Poland is not yet lost as long as we are alive” is a satirical, futuristic vision of the Polish reality, in which the state of Israel has been destroyed and three million Israeli Jews have returned as refugees to Poland. In this alternative reality, the Polish president is movie star Maciej Stuhr (played by the actual Maciej Stuhr) who himself made the decision to convert to Judaism, inspiring 4 million non-Jewish Poles to follow suit and convert themselves. Poland, now a country with over 7 million Jews, is on the eve of the referendum vote to determine whether Poland will become the new Jewish state. “Poland is not yet lost …” is a provocation exploring both the seduction and dangers of nationalism. It is written, directed and performed by Polish Jews, Dorota Abbe, born in Poland and Michael Rubenfeld, a native of Canada, who play versions of themselves in the performance. Structured much like a political rally, the audience is invited to imagine Poland’s incredible possible future Jewish reality; a world of equality … for all Jewish people. in^set is a flexible chamber ensemble founded in 2018 by David Aguila (trumpet), Teresa Díaz de Cossio (flute), and Ilana Waniuk (violin), dedicated to creation, improvisation, and experimentation. Committed to expanding instrumental practice beyond the confines of contemporary classical music, in^set explores the sonic and visual possibilities of everyday objects, hacked electronics, graphic notation, and hybrid media. "Traces in Sound and Light" is a program that traverses the spaces between acoustic and electronic, composed and improvised, visual and sonic. Featuring works by Nathan Haering, Melissa Vargas Franco, and in^set members Aguila, Díaz de Cossio, and Waniuk. The concert culminates in the premiere of a new work by Jacques Zafra. Each piece explores different sonic worlds inspired by graphic notation, visual interplay, and experimental traces in sound and light. Is life simply better in miniature? In this ceramics class, become a miniature crafter and explore the charm of scaled-down fun. Create miniatures for your doll houses, shadow boxes, and small-scale structures. Students will also learn how to make personalized altars―a perfect place to put mini objects on and hang on the wall for a beautiful display. Beginner-friendly! No pottery experience is necessary. In this class, we will draw from classical and modern art masters who worked on toned paper. You will learn how to use the tone of the paper plus white to create dynamic and expressive drawings. This course will sharpen your skills in rendering form, value, and texture. Basic composition, anatomy, and perspective will also be taught. Materials: You do not need everything on this list. Buy only the medium or supplies you want to work with. Pan Pastel: black and white, two triangle-shaped wands, one for each. Charcoal: Black or Sanguine charcoal pencils such as General’s 2B and 4B; compressed charcoal sticks or a small stick of soft vine charcoal. General’s White Charcoal Pencil (extra—General’s White Drawing stick, White Conte Crayon, or White Nu Pastel). Blending stump, small and medium; sharpener and/or craft knife and sanding pad. Kneaded eraser, Tombow MONO zero Eraser (extra—White Vinyl Eraser, Faber-Castell Perfection Eraser #7056 and 7058). Shaw is executive director of San Diego ART Matters, an advocacy and arts service provider to the region’s nonprofit arts and culture sector. As executive director, she serves as the organization’s chief strategist, spokesperson, and champion for SDAM’s mission – to strengthen San Diego’s creative ecosystem and advocate for greater public and private investment in the people and institutions that make our region’s arts and culture sector thrive. With a career spanning over three decades, Felicia has served in several executive and director-level leadership positions, including the Women’s Museum of California, the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, the San Diego Foundation, and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture. Felicia’s commitment to the arts includes volunteer leadership positions within various cultural organizations. She is an appointee to the San Diego County Commission for Arts and Culture, where she chairs the agency’s Strategic Planning Committee. She serves on the boards and finance committees of the Mingei International Museum and Moxie Theatre and is also board Chair of California for the Arts, a statewide advocacy organization. A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Communications, Felicia completed additional undergraduate study at UC San Diego, majoring in art history, theory, and criticism.
