About the Speaker: Gabriel Wardi, MD, MPH, FACEP, is a board-certified emergency physician cross-trained in internal medicine and critical care at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), where he is also an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. He is the founding Chief of the Division of Critical Care within the Department of Emergency Medicine. The major focus of his career has been on improving the diagnosis and outcomes of sepsis patients. He is the Medical Director of Hospital Sepsis at UC San Diego, a position he has had since 2018. In this role, he has overseen a 40% drop in sepsis mortality. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to investigate novel approaches to improve care of patients with sepsis through big data and artificial intelligence approaches. Dr. Wardi has been selected by his peers as a "Top Doctor" in San Diego multiple times. Dr. Wardi has over 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters published focusing on care of patients with sepsis and novel approaches using AI in medicine to improve patient-centered outcomes. Discover how a 3D modeling project at San Diego State University is bringing a historic collection of Mesoamerican masks into the digital age. This lecture will explore how these digital models are enhancing teaching and public interpretation while tracing the deep history of masks as ritual, funerary, and ceremonial objects in ancient societies like Teotihuacan. The presentation will also examine how these traditions endure today in community practices such as danzas, offering a look at the ongoing cultural significance of masks across centuries of change. Meet your lecturers: Keith Chan is a local anthropology instructor at Grossmont College, MiraCosta College, and San Diego State University. He is especially interested in using immersive technology in his teaching to bring students face-to-face with culture and biology. He created the virtual anthropology museum AnVRopomotron, which won the first Poly Award for Best Educational Experience, and is working on PaleoCalifornia, which turns the Pleistocene into a virtual reality theme park ride. He was also a recent research fellow at SDSU's Virtual Immersive Learning and Teaching center, in which he launched the current project on masks. Irene Gonzalez received her M.A. in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University, where her research focused on cultural preservation. Her work has explored the importance of community museums, specifically in Mexico, where she conducted field research in Oaxaca. She is currently the Collections Coordinator for the Mesoamerican Mask Collection at SDSU’s Center for Latin American Studies. Irene is passionate about bridging technology and cultural heritage in ways that are equitable and grounded in deep respect for Indigenous knowledge systems. Teens explore design & woodworking with a focus on chairs! Mon through Fri, July 7 – 11 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 13+ years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about designing chairs for every body! Steffanie Dotson and Don Ostertag welcome teens for a week of chair design, building, and design exploration. Why are most chairs the same size? We’ll talk about how chairs can be made for every body, and how comfort and designs affect our bodies. We’ll be sketching designs with pencil to paper and then we’ll move into model making and prototypes of chairs. Along the way, we’ll talk about the basics of how a chair is built, the various forces, and how failures can happen when not built properly. We’ll do mock-ups with plywood to refine our designs. Depending on how many design iterations each chairmaker goes through, by the end of the week, they’ll have some fun designs, models, lots of knowledge, and hopefully built chairs to show for it. Machine and tool safety is a big part of this camp. It is intended for teens with a keen interest in woodworking, design, or making chairs. Cell phones will be put away during this camp. Teens must be at least 13 years old to participate, since we’ll be using big machines in addition to hand tools. Sorry, no adults allowed. This camp is for teens, ages 13+ years.
