What is this…Artist’s Way? Maybe you had a friend who read through it years ago and made some significant breakthroughs. Or you’ve had the book on your bookshelf and promised yourself–this is the year I open it!–every year? Or you took a class long ago…but don’t remember much. Wherever you are at, this is for ANYONE who wants to live a more creative, intentional life. The Artist’s Way is for novices and working artists of all types, including writers, visual artists, actors, dancers, musicians…ANYONE who recognizes their innate creativity. In a supportive and safe setting, we will: Acquaint ourselves with the basics and tools of The Artist’s Way (by Julia Cameron) Work on activities meant to break through some of our creative blocks and give us better insight into creative work we might consider pursuing And more! Week 1 will be an intro to the program. The next six weeks will be devoted to the chapters (and creative practices), and the last week is a final creative presentation by each student. We shall be open to the public and will teach those interested in learning more about Wikipedia how to edit/modify/create content on Wikipedia, how to upload content onto Wikimedia Commons, and answer any questions the public may have. Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. About the Authors Sarina Dahlan ’98 is the author of the bestselling Four Cities trilogy — “Reset,” “Preset” and “Freeset” — as well as “Shadow Play: Ten Tales from the In-between.” Born into an Indonesian family in Thailand and immigrating to the United States at age 12, Dahlan brings a global perspective to her work, influenced by folklore, mythology and Japanese manga. A UC San Diego alumna with degrees in psychology and visual arts, her writing explores memory, identity and the cost of utopia. S.B. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling. Her novels include “Machinehood,” “Meru” and “Loka,” which examine themes such as automation, cultural identity and artificial intelligence. A former electrical engineer with degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing from UC San Diego, Divya’s fiction often reflects her technical background and challenges conventional genre boundaries. "Songs of Alice Barnett: A San Diego Composer’s Unsung Legacy" Concert-Lecture Series presented by Dr. Katina Mitchell and Dr. Yewon Lee Mondays, June 16, 23 & 30, 2025 In an enlightening and entertaining concert and lecture series, vocalist Dr. Katina Mitchell introduces audiences to a long overlooked local music luminary, composer Alice Barnett. Over three evenings, Monday, June 16, 23, and 30, Mitchell will discuss this valued representative of the art song while also performing Barnett’s works in Mitchell’s lovely soprano voice with piano accompaniment by Dr. Yewon Lee. Within the classical tradition, even the most sophisticated female musicians receive less enduring celebration than their male contemporaries, and Alice Barnett (1886–1975), later known as Alice Barnett Stevenson, a renowned female art song composer who spent her life in San Diego, deserves rediscovery. Despite national praise during her lifetime—when her works were performed from local schools to New York stages—her name has faded into obscurity. Barnett’s life was marked by artistic determination, early divorce, single motherhood, and musical entrepreneurship. Trained in Chicago and Berlin, she built her career in San Diego, composing, performing, and producing concerts. A co-founder of the San Diego Symphony Association, she was also a passionate music educator and arts advocate. Her Impressionist-inspired art songs were hailed as both beautiful and adventurous, earning her the description of “one of the greatest song writers in the country.” Her story reveals a dynamic cultural legacy hidden in plain sight—a woman who shaped her city’s musical life and deserves recognition today.
