Urban Havens: Gardens of Historic North Park and Burlingame—the San Diego Floral Association’s annual “garden tour with a difference,” will feature eight distinctive gardens in the lovely historic neighborhoods of North Park and Burlingame. Burlingame, a ten-block neighborhood between North and South Park, is known for its rose- stained sidewalks and historic craftsman homes and Spanish Revival bungalows. The gardens all surround historic homes, and range in theme from natives, tropicals, edibles, and waterwise exotics to flowering trees and blooming roses. North City invites families and friends to dive into a free outdoor screening of Disney’s "Finding Nemo" on Friday, July 18. Starting at 5 p.m., movie lovers can enjoy games, hands-on activities, and character meet-and-greets before Nemo, Marlin, and Dory swim across the big screen at 6:30 p.m. Guests will receive complimentary popcorn and can purchase an array of bites from North City’s eateries, including newly opened A Lo Fresco, serving internationally inspired bowls and wraps; Buona Forchetta, preparing fresh pizza onsite from its mobile pizzeria truck; Wynston’s Ice Cream, featuring themed flavors; Maya’s Cookies, offering cookie decorating kits; Milonga Empanadas, grilling choripán sandwiches with Argentine chorizo and chimichurri; and Draft Republic, pouring beer, wine, and cocktails for adults. Our July VolunBEERS is dedicated to supporting youth literacy within San Diego with Words Alive!, an organization whose mission is to open opportunities for life success by inspiring a commitment to reading. Attendees will join us in packing learning kits that include a craft activity, resource guides, and a copy of a book for students. Volunteers will additionally join us in a letter writing campaign that is dedicated to students, educators, and volunteers in their programs.
