With a goal of providing important and useful information on special education law and practice, the University of San Diego School of Law offers its Special Education Law and Advocacy Series (SELAS). This specialized program not only educates participants about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other related laws and includes an in-depth look at Regional Center services, it also offers practical tips for special education advocacy. Past participants have included parents of children with disabilities, professionals working in related fields, school district staff, related services providers (such as speech and language pathologists), attorneys, and others. The series includes six seminars, which may be taken individually or as a complete program. The seminars are taught by experienced special education attorneys as well as a licensed clinical psychologist. No textbook is required and each seminar includes electronic handouts. A “Certificate of Completion” will be given to all enrollees who complete all six seminars in person or by Zoom. **Viewing the recording alone will not qualify for certification. "Jump N Funk" is an immersive multimedia experience honoring the sonic legacy of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer and activist, Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti. This celebration captures the essence of Fela’s groundbreaking fusion of traditional Nigerian rhythms and American Funk, a sound that continues to resonate globally across generations. Since 2001, international DJ, producer, and scholar Rich Medina has served as the main conduit for connecting this rich Pan-African sound to dance floors worldwide. His passion and expertise have kept Fela’s legacy alive, bringing the Afrobeat movement into new cultural spaces. This San Diego debut is presented in partnership with Professor King Britt through his Blacktronika course at UC San Diego, which honors the contributions of innovators of color in electronic and dance music. This collaboration creates a powerful bridge between history, education, and dance floor energy, celebrating Fela’s enduring influence on global music culture. The San Diego County Fair will begin its "Summer Pet-tacular" Wednesday, bringing wild rides, hot musical acts and crazy culinary concoctions to the Del Mar Fairgrounds through July 6.

Rooted in African-American freedom struggles and Igbo cosmology, The Skeuomorph unfolds as a poetic meditation on technological agency and the myths we encode in our machines. At the center of the exhibition stands BLKBX (BB)—a sculptural object, a "smarter" speaker and a speculative AI entity trained on documents of African American and African Diasporic histories, biographies and philosophies of freedom. Through a multisensory installation featuring reimagined political speeches, archival fragments, and layered sonic environments, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how history reverberates in the present—shaping the voices we amplify, the ones we silence, and the futures we imagine. Co-sponsored by the Department of Visual Arts Visiting Speaker Series, this event includes panel discussion with Louis Chude-Sokei, Professor and George and Joyce Wein Chair of English and Director of the African American and Black Diaspora Studies Program at Boston University; in addition to recently publishing The Sound of Culture: Diaspora and Black Technopoetics (2015), Chude-Sokei collaborated with Berlin based electronic artists Mouse on Mars, with whom he produced the album Anarchic Artificial Intelligence (2021). National Cathedral Organist Thomas Sheehan to Perform at St. James by-the-Sea Following President Carter's State Memorial Service Three days after performing at President Jimmy Carter's state funeral, Thomas Sheehan, Cathedral Organist and Interim Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral, will present an organ recital at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The recital will showcase St. James' magnificent new Rosales/Parsons pipe organ, dedicated in 2023. The instrument represents a remarkable collaboration between two distinguished organ builders: Manuel Rosales of Los Angeles and Parsons Organ Builders of Canandaigua, New York. This masterpiece of craftsmanship features 65 voices, 79 ranks, 102 stops, and 4,551 pipes, making it a landmark instrument in North America. The program will feature the grand Praeludium in G Major by Nicholaus Bruhns, Sasurai, a virtuosic piece by 20th-century Japanese composer Takashi Sakai, and variations on the beloved hymn tune Engelberg by Mark Miller. Following this performance, Sheehan returns to Washington to prepare for the 2025 presidential inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral. Dr. Sheehan brings an impressive musical pedigree to this performance. As the Cathedral Organist at Washington National Cathedral, he has performed at numerous significant national events, including the virtual service celebrating President Biden and Vice President Harris's inauguration. His distinguished career includes positions at Harvard University's Memorial Church, Saint Mark's Church in Philadelphia, and Trinity Episcopal Church in Princeton. A graduate of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music with diplomas in both organ and harpsichord, Sheehan holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University and degrees from Westminster Choir College. In 2016, he was recognized as one of The Diapason's "20 under 30," marking him as a rising star in the organ performance world. His international performance career has taken him across the United States, Canada, and Europe, with notable appearances in Reykjavík, Toulouse, and Montréal.
