WorldBeat Cultural Center's Juneteenth celebration features the unveiling of a community quilt and honors the artistry, history and deeper meaning behind African American quilting traditions.

Los Angeles-based artist Shirley Tse (b.1968) works in sculpture, installation, photography, and text. She deconstructs our world of synthetic objects that carry paradoxical meanings and constructs different models in which differences might come together. Various strategies of visualising heterogeneity are used: conflating different scales, fusing the organic with the industrial, crossing between the literal and the metaphorical, merging different narratives, and collapsing the subject and object relationship. Tse received a Master of Fine Arts from ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena and Bachelor of Arts degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong Department of Fine Arts. Tse represented Hong Kong at the 58th Venice Biennale. Her work is featured in many articles, catalogues, and publications including "Akademie X: Lessons in Art + Life" (2015) and "Sculpture Today" (2007). Tse received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2009 and is on faculty at California Institute of the Arts since 2001 where she is Robert Fitzpatrick Chair in Art. Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Tuesdays, July 22, 29, August 5, 12, 26 From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Select a date from the drop-down menu. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Union Hall Gallery presents "Hiding in Plain Site," the debut retrospective by San Diego-based artist and designer Joseph A. Henseler, opening Saturday, July 12, 2025. The exhibition features 88 original works—ranging from sculpture and stained glass to painting and architectural design—created over the course of 30 years without public display. The show offers a rare glimpse into the deeply introspective practice of an artist who has quietly created in communion with nature, spirit, and self. Having moved across the country to live in the mountains of San Diego County to be mentored by renowned artist James Hubbell, Henseler’s work is rooted in reflection, emotional depth, and human connection. Opening night includes live music, refreshments, and a Q&A with the artist. The final night of the exhibition will feature a special live performance by Henseler’s wife, Chilean vocalist Lorena Isabell.
