Agreement Reached Over SDG&E's Remote Meter Reading System

Utility advocates signed a settlement agreement with San Diego Gas and Electric over the use of a smart metering system. The system allows the utility to remotely read customer meters.

Utility advocates signed a settlement agreement with San Diego Gas and Electric over the use of a smart metering system. The system allows the utility to remotely read customer meters.

The Utility Consumers' Action Network and another group said the advanced meters would cost consumers more money. U-CAN's Michael Shames says the settlement makes the meters a better deal for SDG&E customers.

Shames: As a result of SDG&E agreeing to installing some new functionalities that made the meters a whole lot more useful to customers, our expectation is that the meters will now be a worthwhile investment and now will be worth the cost of installation and they actually will be useful to the customers who will be served by these meters.

Shames says he expects the state Public Utilities Commission will approve the settlement. SDG&E plans to roll out the system within the next year.
