Point Loma Students March Against Gang Violence

Students from Point Loma High School held a march today to bring attention to the problem of gang violence in San Diego. Earlier this month Point Loma ninth grader Michael Taylor was shot and killed by gang members at a party in Southeast San Diego. Associated Student Body President Alexa Da Rosa organized the march.

Da Rosa: Our main thing that we’re trying to focus on is, um, just a crack down from law enforcement on gang violence.

Da Rosa says she’d like to talk about the problem in front of the city council. Councilman Tony Young represents the Southeast San Diego area and created the city’s commission on gang prevention and intervention. He says marches are important, but there has to be a comprehensive approach to addressing the issue. He says the council has done a lot to combat gangs, but he says the council needs help from the community to stop gang violence.
