SDG&E Claims to Be on Track for Renewable Energy Mandate

San Diego Gas and Electric says it's on target to meet a state mandate to use renewable energy by 2010 - even though the utility is not even half-way to the goal. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The state is requiring public utilities are required to get 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2010.

San Diego Gas and Electric had wanted to use the proposed Sunrise Powerlink transmission line to bring renewables here. But that won't happen by the deadline.

Jennifer Briscoe with San Diego Gas and Electric says if the project is approved the earliest construction would start is 2011. But she says the company is still on track to meet the renewable mandate.

Briscoe: We're getting really close. We're actually have about, nearly 16 percent under contract for 2010. And we've been actively procuring additional renewable resources since 2002.

The company says it's currently getting about 8 percent of its energy from renewable resources.

Despite being on track to meet the 2010 requirement, SDG&E says the Sunrise project will be critical in meeting future renewable goals and to meet the region's power needs.
