California Seeks Firms To Scout High-Speed Rail Route

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- The California High-Speed Rail Authority has put out a call for firms to handle engineering and surveying for its prospective route from Fresno to Bakersfield.

The Fresno Bee reports the agency issued a request last week for companies to submit their qualifications in anticipation of awarding a contract of up to $1.5 million.

The newspaper says the winning company or companies will set up the proposed route between American Avenue, at the south end of Fresno, and the northwestern outskirts of Bakersfield.

Companies must submit their statements of qualifications by Aug. 15.

Last month the agency won approval from a federal railroad oversight board to start construction this summer on the first leg of the bullet train.

But a lawsuit pending in Sacramento County Superior Court says the current project is substantially different than what voters approved.

I'll believe it when I see it. The auto industry, tire industry, oil companies and the like are going to fight tooth and nail to keep us from having a metro system similar to Europe. They want cars in every driveway and a rail system will eliminate that need.

This is also a guarantee for major money for lawyers on both sides of the issue. Some lawyers will likely find new ways to find groups willing to sue over a multitude of questions, both pro and con.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. This project will never carry a passenger because it will never be built. The current plan for super rapid transit through the Central Valley is ludicrous and could only happen in California, my home state. This project is only one of many wasteful ways Sacramento is wantonly spending our tax dollars. I truly believe that California is a lost cause and I am glad I am well into retirement and will hopefully not see the final descent into ruin. Strong words for sure, but take a look around for yourself.
