Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visited San Diego City College today to talk about the importance of funding all community colleges equally. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.
For 30 years California has funded community colleges based on a confusing and outdated formula that pays some colleges little as $3,500 per student, and others as much as $8,000. San Diego County has been historically shortchanged by this formula. But Schwarzenegger has included $130-million in his budget to equalize funding. He told a crowd of college officials that the investment will continue.
Schwarzenegger: And we are putting new money into more facilities to upgrade classrooms, and more vocational programs like the nursing, engineering, and machine technology programs and so on.
That includes $3.5 million for the San Diego Community College District. The governor has also proposed spending $3.7 billion over the next ten years on the state's community colleges. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
