San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders wants President Bush to intervene in the Mount Soledad Cross debate. Sanders hopes Bush will put an end to the 17-year-old dispute. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Sanders is teaming up with local Congressman Duncan Hunter in asking President Bush to seize control of the city-owned property by using the federal power of eminent domain. If the President agrees, immediate condemnation proceedings would bring the cross and the half-acre it sits on into the federal park system. Both politicians have sent letters to the president pleading their case. Sanders says he hopes the federal government will take control of the property.
Sanders: Some say this is debate is about the cross, I could not disagree more. This is not just about a Christian symbol. What this boils down to is preserving a nationally registered war memorial that is an integral part of San Diego's history.
Sanders plans to meet with President Bush next week to talk about the take over. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
