The Oceanside Unified School District supports Superintendent Ken Noonan in his new role as president of California's Education Board. He was elected to the post Wednesday. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Oceanside school trustees say they're confident Noonan's new position as president will not interfere with him leading Oceanside schools. Noonan became a member of the state board last year when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him. The state board sets educational policy for all of the state's school districts. Oceanside school trustee Roy Youngblood says Noonan is a strong leader who can bring educators together.
Youngblood: "When you have teachers speaking highly of a superintendent, that's an unusual situation. But that's the working relationship that we have in the district between the board, and the administrators and the teachers."
Noonan has been criticized for his opposition to bilingual education in Oceanside and for adopting a zero-tolerance policy for students who misbehave. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
