Officials Gather For Conference on Lindbergh Airport Expansion

Mayors from all San Diego’s 18 cities and the Airport Authority met today to talk about the future of Lindbergh Field. The debate is about how to expand the airport, without causing gridlock downtown. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

This morning’s joint meeting was a crucial turning point in the long running airport saga. For the first time, Mayor Jerry Sanders took a stand. He suggested delaying the Airport Authority’s Master Plan And he said an alternative vision presented by former State Senator Steve Peace is worth considering before any decisions are made.

Sanders : This has been very compelling for me today and I think it should be compelling for San Diego and I agree with Steve that this may be the single most important decision we make for this region in all of our careers.

The Airport’s Master Plan would add more gates and parking along the Bay front. Steve Peace’s model would integrate the airport into a transit hub with trolleys and buses on the north side accessible from Interstate 5. The agencies agreed to work together to decide the next step.
