New Report Pending on Rancho Bernardo Cheating Scandal

Poway Unified School District's attorney says a report should be released early next week with more details about the cheating scandal at Rancho Bernardo High School. Six students were recently suspended for allegedly hacking into a campus computer system to change grades. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The Poway school district's computer and technology department will issue the internal report. It comes on the heels of an emotional letter written by Rancho Bernando's assistant principal in which he says the scandal is the school's worst technological nightmare.

The district's attorney Jack Sleeth says the report should explain how the kids manipulated the system. It’s still unclear whether they hacked directly into system or used an online hacking program.

Sleeth : It will certainly tell us how they got in, if they got in, and it will tell us if we have the system secure. It could take longer to determine just exactly what happened while they were in.

As many as eight Advanced Placement students could be at fault. The district’s IT department has interviewed all of them. Six will remain on suspension pending a full investigation.
