Tom Fudge: In last week's June primary, there were two San Diego political officials who won their elections outright by getting more than 50 percent of the vote. One was Mayor Jerry Sanders, and the other was 5th District City Councilman-Elect Carl DeMaio. DeMaio is a Republican who will be taking over Brian Mainschein's old council seat. Mainschein is termed out. DeMaio defeated retired fire chief George George.
Carl DeMaio has an interesting history in San Diego. He was president and founder of the Performance Institute. Though a Republican, he was also a senior fellow with the Libertarian Reason Foundation. He developed a reputation, among some people, as a political gadfly, quick to criticize and brimming with what he called reform ideas. His activism took an anti-tax and anti-labor tone. For instance, he lobbied strongly against raising San Diego's hotel taxes.
Now, of course, DeMaio has moved from the outside to the inside of City Hall. He's joined forces with councilwoman Donna Frye to suggest ways to change the way the City Council does business.
