San Diego’s Center City Development Corporation will reveal the cost of the two competing proposals submitted by developers for a new City Hall complex downtown. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The pictures of gleaming glass high rises have already been made public, but today the CCDC unveils its analysis of what a new city hall complex might cost.
Jeff Graham of CCDC says both developers have submitted plans that will cost less than upgrading the existing city hall and renewing leases on the nearby buildings that house city workers.
Graham : Money is numbers one two and three on our list right now and while the quality of the design and the urban planning that went into it and the amount of private development and the economic development will be considered, the number one answer will be does it save the city money?
Graham says CCDC has done an analysis of 7 different scenarios including building a new city hall on a different site.
The current city hall is only 43 years old but no longer meets seismic and other building codes. For well over a decade it has been too small to house all the city’s downtown workers and the cost of renting space to house the overflow will jump in five years when leases renew.
