This weekend will see a different vision for city streets in San Diego. CycloSDias is an annual event that's a chance to play, skate and cycle in it the streets without the danger of car traffic.
This year CicloSDias San Diego’s nearly four-mile route will connect the communities of Normal Heights and City Heights with streets free of cars.
The event is organized by San Diego County Bicycle Coalition in partnership with the City of San Diego and a number of community groups such as El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association, City Heights Community Development Corporation and the Adams Avenue Business Association.
Andy Hansaw is the Executive Director of San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. He said the idea is for people to reclaim the streets and see what is possible.
“It's biking. It's walking. It's skating. It's strolling. It's dog walking. There'll be bands and music in the streets. There'll be activation on the streets but there won't be cars on the streets,” Hansaw said.
In City Heights, there will be a CicloSDias Cumbia Party at Fair@44 on El Cajon Boulevard. There will be a free concert, a zumba session and food.
“I think a big objective of this event is to connect people to their existing communities but maybe connect people to other communities too. And you can do that by riding comfortably to and from, you know, both directions you'll do it and explore it. And so I think it's really exciting to connect those two communities. And let people see what maybe they haven't seen before,” Hansaw said.
The City of San Diego is the largest financial supporter of CicloSDias. The city's program, MoveFreeSD, was created to educate people about mobility options, bicycling and public transit. MoveFreeSD is funded by a $125,000 grant from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).
