California's public colleges and universities are preparing for another round of state budget cuts that could lead to higher tuition and fewer classes.
The chancellors of California State University and California Community Colleges said Monday that campuses are making plans to cope with midyear reductions in state funding.
The 23-campus CSU system lost $650 million in the latest state budget, while the 112-campus community college system lost $400 million and raised fees from $26 to $36 per unit.
The two systems could each lose up to $100 million more if state tax revenue falls below projections, triggering automatic cuts to education and social services.
Both chancellors say midyear funding cuts would result in fewer courses, larger classes and scrapped summer sessions. Community college fees would rise to $46 per unit.
