A student who loses an athletic scholarship because of injury should receive an academic scholarship instead. Same for students who use up all their NCAA eligibility but are still working toward graduating. And low-income student-athletes should get help paying for health insurance. Those are just some of the "rights" Democratic State Senator Alex Padilla wants to give student-athletes at California's largest universities.
"I respect the NCAA. love college sports. But I am a legislator in California and I have a duty to protect all Californians - including student athletes in our colleges and universities," commented Padilla.
This bill would only apply to schools whose athletic programs average more than 10 million dollars a year in media revenue - such as Cal, Stanford, USC and UCLA. The measure has already passed the Senate but faces several more votes before reaching the governor
