The U.S. Forest Service and California Public Utilities Service are hosting a public meeting to discuss San Diego Gas & Electric's master special use permit project.
The project would convert nearly 2,300 wooden power poles to steel in and around the Cleveland National Forest. Donna Tisdale is with the group Protect Our Communities Foundation, which is encouraging public involvement in Wednesday night's meeting because it suspects there may be more to the project than meets the eye.
"The project they're proposing, the master special use permit, I strongly believe is a stealth action," Tisdale said. "It's not just fire-hardening, changing wood to steel polls...but I believe it will increase carrying capacity that would support numerous solar projects that are proposed along those lines in the back country."
Wednesday's meeting will be held at the Alpine Community Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
