The new Autism Discovery Institute at Rady Children’s Hospital offers a unique way to help children with autism.
What makes the $1.1 million facility unique is its three level approach to autism -- all under one roof.
Inside the nearly 12,000 square foot institute there is a diagnostic treatment center, an autism inclusion school with three toddler classrooms, two preschool rooms and a sensory motor gym. There is also an on-site autism research center.
Kristin Gist is the senior director of developmental services at the institute. She said early intervention is important when dealing with autistic children and their families.
“Starting an early and intensive educational intervention program makes a tremendous difference in the outcome of children who have autism spectrum disorders.”
The Autism Discovery Institute officially opened its doors on January 13, 2011.
