KPBS is premiering a new season of “My First Day,” a podcast series that explores the experiences of people who came to San Diego from elsewhere and now call it home. The show is available now for download on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and other podcast players.
First days can be exhilarating, terrifying - or a mix of both. They mark the beginning of life’s chapters and define who we ultimately become. Whether it’s through joining the military, resettling as a former refugee, or simply chasing the California dream, San Diego is a place that attracts transplants from all across the globe. “My First Day” tells personal stories about the transition to San Diego life.
“For its third season, My First Day shares a range of stories which tie into what makes San Diego unique — from skateboarding to homelessness, military life to gay identity. Ultimately, ‘My First Day’ is about the nature of ‘home,’ in all its beauty and complexity,” says creator and host Andrew Bracken.
Andrew Bracken is a documentary mediamaker working with audio, video, and interactive media. His documentary web series Facing North, about the multi-dimensional relationship between San Diego and Tijuana, was released digitally on PBS in 2017. A recipient of the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst fellowship, he has received support for his work from Latino Public Broadcasting, KPBS, and the Berlinale Talent Campus.
The third season of “My First Day” will feature 10 episodes. The first episode will be released on February 19:
Episode 1: Dart at the Dartboard
Growing up in remote Oregon, Ron Patterson finds it difficult to be around other people. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, he becomes further isolated, and longs for a change of scenery. A random dart throw on a map led him to the Ocean Beach section of San Diego, where he wound up homeless. Many years later, after his camp is discovered by police, Ron gets a chance to finally find a home.
