The State Department is reportedly preparing to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, or part of it, as a terrorist organization.
The designation would allow U.S. financial officials to, among other things, take action against businesses with ties to the Revolutionary Guard.
It's not clear what practical effect the designation would have.
The State Department already has listed Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, and the U.S. has imposed an array of sanctions on the country.
