A 7-month-old koala at the San Diego Zoo will be named "Cambee," but the sex of the joey remains unknown, park officials announced today.
Cambee was born last July 21, but koalas are so small at birth that they remain in their mother's pouch for months. Cambee has only been out of the pouch a couple of times, so the gender is unknown, according to the zoo.
Animal care staff hung three plaques marked with aboriginal names on trees in the koala exhibit, and the mother, Yabber, climbed the tree marked "Cambee,'' which led to the mini marsupial's moniker.
"Cambee'' is aboriginal for `"blanket.''
