Painting using imagery in art is a fun way to tell a visual story. We use black and white photocopies of ancestors (found or real) as the underlying source to paint. This is a way of creating expressiveness with a subject built in. This way of art making can stand up to any art form found in galleries. In this workshop, learn how to incorporate painted photocopies in your work. Also, learn how to properly adhere paper seamlessly (to a canvas or board) without causing bubbles or creases. Students walk away with several paintings and a good understanding of this fun process. Materials: The $40 fee paid to the instructor at first class includes images, mediums, varnish, and 8" x 10" canvases and use of brushes, palette knife, markers, burnishing tool, gloves, paints. Not provided: aprons, palette paper, paper towels and water cans. Feel free to bring your own brushes, paints, palette paper, or any of the above-listed supplies. You may bring your own black and white images to fit 8" x 10" canvases or email jpegs of your images to Lisa to prepare. Images need to be sent to Lisa (lisabebi@gmail.com) by June 14. If you prefer to work with larger than 8" x 10", you must send your selected jpgs to Lisa two weeks prior to the workshop (by June 3) so she can send them out for processing. In this intimate class of eight, students will engage in two 6-hour poses: female for the first two days and male for the following two. Regardless of drawing ability, participants will advance beyond quick sketches, learning a time-tested method for creating more finished figures and portraits. While six hours may seem short compared to traditional ateliers, it provides ample opportunities for Ken and Stephanie to introduce essential vocabulary and concepts that will significantly enhance your drawing skills beyond the typical 20-minute sessions of most sketch groups. During the first two days, you will learn from Ken, and on Days 3 and 4, from Stephanie. In this workshop, you'll learn to create an accurately angled, well-proportioned figure, transform it into volumetric forms like cylinders, cubes, and spheres, and then add the final touches that change an unfinished drawing into a polished art piece. Beginners will be encouraged to start their drawings on newsprint (using vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, and a kneaded eraser), and to then transfer their rough “starts” onto good quality white or toned paper to attain a more finished version in charcoal or graphite. Intermediate and advanced students are free to start in whatever way they prefer on any quality white or toned paper they are accustomed to, using any medium of their choice, such as pencil, charcoal, pan pastel, watercolor, acrylics, or oils. All levels are welcome, as instruction is individualized. Materials: You don’t need to purchase everything on this list. Only buy materials that are relevant to the medium with which you plan to work. If you’re more experienced, you may choose the medium of your preference. Beginners should start Day 1 with newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, and a kneaded eraser. Drawing pad: 18" x 24” smooth newsprint and a wood or foam core drawing board (one inch larger with four clips). Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal and Conte 3B charcoal pencil or your favorite brand. Graphite: 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils. Sharpener: Single edged razor blade or utility knife and rough sandpaper such as 90 grit. Erasers: Kneaded eraser and Tombow eraser. Artists enjoy painting in “the golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work. On the first day we will meet at Sunset Point Park on the grass. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead. Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. No matter how warm it is when you leave home, bring a jacket anyway. DIRECTIONS to Sunset Point Park: From I-5 take Sea World Drive West to Ingraham Street/West Mission Bay Drive. Take West Mission Drive. Once you are on West Mission Bay Drive, turn right at Dana Landing Road, and then immediately turn left into the Sunset Point Park parking lot. Materials: Students should bring their preferred mediums or buy recommended supplies that follow: Only buy what you plan to use. For those using pastels: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson-brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); foam core drawing board at least 1/2” larger than the size of paper you plan to use; four clips to hold paper; paper towels. For those using oils: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror (for seeing errors in reverse); a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake. For those using acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber.
