Arguably the most influential surfboard shaper of in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Dick Brewer has often been called the father of the modern-day surfboard. He changed the design of surfing equipment not once, not twice, but three times in his 50-year career as a trailblazer, with all the notorious tales that have until now remained just rumored legends. Brewer’s designs have been interpreted, modified, and often copied through the gifted hands of shapers on every coast and in every decade since the 1960’s. He mentored, taught, and inspired dozens of the world’s top shapers. Today, his rails, his rockers, and bottom are intrinsic to surfboard design. Directed and edited with the skill of a lifelong cinematographer Bob Campi, this biopic captures the rise, fall, and ultimate redemption of visionary who changed the world of surfing forever. that was a trailblazer throughout his career. Join a warm, judgment-free leyenkrayz (reading circle) conducted entirely in Yiddish, designed for Intermediate II and Advanced students. Together, we will explore and translate selections from Ezra Korman’s groundbreaking 1928 Chicago anthology Yidishe Dikhterins (“Yiddish Women Poets”). Our focus will be on female poets from Ukraine, including Dine Lipkes, Khane Levin, Mire Khenkin, and Anyuta Pyatigorskaya. Along the way, you’ll deepen your reading fluency, enrich your vocabulary, and discover the life stories behind these remarkable voices. Prerequisites: Solid Yiddish reading skills and a basic working vocabulary are required. This unique community event will feature 3-hour D&D one-shot adventures, a silent auction with high-value items, and a whimsical “Student Store” where attendees can buy in-game perks to support or challenge the players. Guests will also enjoy a nostalgic “Bougie Brown Bag Lunch,” featuring upgraded classics like sandwiches, chips, desserts, and drinks. All proceeds benefit The Goblin Guild, a San Diego nonprofit (501c3 pending) that uses tabletop gaming to empower youth, teaching creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
