Join us this Summer on the Strand! The Coronado Public Library, in collaboration with the Silver Strand Youth Center, will be hosting exciting events for all ages every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. all summer long! Kids, teens, and adults can sign up for our Summer Reading Program at these events, log their reads, and pick up their prizes while enjoying a different fun-filled event each week. These events will take place outside, so pack your sunscreen and a blanket to sit on and enjoy! This program is made possible thanks to the support of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. Get ready for some firehouse fun with the Coronado Fire Department! Kids will get an up-close look at a real fire truck—complete with a tour of the engine or truck and all the exciting equipment firefighters use. Nearly half of Balboa Park’s 450+ species of trees come from Australia and New Zealand. This tour provides an overview of the park’s collection of trees from down under, which includes a variety of gums, wattles, bottlebrushes, paperbarks, and banksias. We will discuss why we have so many in the park, their unusual properties, how they are able to survive so far from their native habitats, and why some are regarded as the most valuable trees in San Diego. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the first Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 90 minutes and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. Join Southern Caregiver Resource Center at our office for an afternoon of art and networking! We invite community members and affiliated organizations alike to the unveiling of “Portraits in Caregiving”, a series of photographs honoring the caregiving experience. This exhibit captures the essence of family and unconditional love through intimate and tender moments found in the routine of caregiving. Guests will have the opportunity to speak to the photographers as well as the featured caregivers. SCRC’s staff will also be present to give you a tour of our office space, share information about our vital support services for caregivers, and discuss professional networking and corporate partnership opportunities. Media Arts Center San Diego’s 24th Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Awards Ceremony and Student Film Festival 2025 will take place on Sunday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students from across San Diego County will screen their films showcasing their talents and be celebrated during the awards ceremony at UCSD’s Park and Market in downtown San Diego (1100 Market St). Student filmmakers from schools all across the county, including Central San Diego, El Cajon, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Clairemont, Vista, Fallbrook, and La Mesa are among the participants. The day will begin with the awards ceremony for all grade levels 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.. Following the ceremony, screenings of all the nominated films will take place upstairs at MACSD’s Digital Gym CINEMA from noon to 4 p.m. Past student participants have stated about the annual IVIE event, “It’s like a replica of the Grammy’s. We get awards, get called up,” or “It means a lot to be able to have a space for us to share and be proud of our work.”. Founder and Executive Director, Ethan van Thillo, of MACSD states, "We are so elated that San Diego's youngest filmmakers continue to produce amazing films despite the enduring challenges of the pandemic. They have inspired our team to produce a wonderful film festival to celebrate their cinematic achievements!
