Maren Morris has broken boundaries, smashed records, and affirmed herself as a dynamic vocalist, prolific songwriter, and showstopping performer on her own terms. Local octogenarian, Navy veteran, and dyslexic playwright, Daisy I. Dumas-Featherstone has proven it is never too late to fulfill a dream. While battling cancer and dealing with losses of family members and friends, she has completed her MFA degree in Creative Writing in May of this year, at the age of 85! Unable to have a public reading of her thesis play, "MAST/MASK" before graduation, she is having one now.

Sean Kurth serves as the director of membership at KPBS. Sean’s role is central to the station’s ability to serve members by leading a division that includes audience services, engagement, administration, acquisition and on-air fundraising for TV, radio and digital. Since he joined KPBS in March 2024, the station has experienced a significant increase in membership and local financial support – which Sean attributes to the spirit of generosity from San Diegans as well as the excellence of his team and partners.

She earned her Masters degree and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts focusing on Theater Arts, costuming and stage makeup. She was a founding member of the PACT Theatre out of New York and Gross National Product Comedy team in Washington DC. She's been a director, actress, production and administrative assistant and an active member of advisory boards. (Somewhere along the line she also earned her MA in Teaching ESL!) Bringing new projects to theatre companies, Catherine has acted as producer, director and Assistant to the Playwright for the award-winning show, "Pushcart Tony" in Chicago. On the West Coast, Catherine has written reviews for several productions including for Carlsbad's New Village Arts. Ms. Greitzer has acted and directed at Oceanside's Brooks Theatre as well as with Fallbrook's Senior Theatre, "AGE Upon Stage." Kumeyaay historian Ethan Banegas Luiseño-Kumeyaay (SDSU-American Indian Studies) discusses the process to develop a community-engaged comic that speaks from the perspective of the Kumeyaay people. This comic is a way to tell stories of Kumeyaay people from past to present and engage with their own communities, schools, and beyond. Hear more about how tribal historians are driving the work of this visual storytelling project as a creative team brings it to life. About Ethan Ethan grew up on the Barona Reservation in San Diego County. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History, Religious Studies, and Political Science in 2009 and his Master of Arts degree in History in 2017 from the University of San Diego (USD). Banegas is owner of Kumeyaay.com and Historian for the San Diego History Center, which operates the Junípero Serra Museum. He was first published in 2017 (Indian Gaming in the Kumeyaay Nation). In 2020, he published the Kumeyaay Oral History Project, a community-based research project, after collecting thirty-three personal interviews, video-taped oral histories, and photographs from San Diego’s First People. In 2024, he published two comics—“Beyond Gaming” and “Our Past, Present, and Future”—and served as project director and author of the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project. Public Matters is an initiative that provides content, conversation and events ensuring all San Diegans understand their opportunity to participate in the democratic process including news stories on politics and governance, facilitated, in-person discussions around important issues that often divide us, helpful resources and explainers about participation in community groups and institutions that make decisions that impact our lives on a daily basis.

Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. Admission is free and open to the public with required registration. A UC San Diego alumna with degrees in psychology and visual arts, her writing explores memory, identity and the cost of utopia. S.B. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling. Her novels include “Machinehood,” “Meru” and “Loka,” which examine themes such as automation, cultural identity and artificial intelligence. A former electrical engineer with degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing from UC San Diego, Divya’s fiction often reflects her technical background and challenges conventional genre boundaries.
