Molecules that sense touch and other pressures - Front Row lecture with Ardem Patapoutian, PhD Description: The inner workings of the brain have eluded neuroscientists for ages—including how we perceive sensations such as touch, pain, sound and even blood flow. In this free in-person Front Row lecture, Scripps Research professor and Nobel laureate Ardem Patapoutian will discuss the molecular sensors that enable the mind to interpret different physical and chemical stimuli. These discoveries—which Patapoutian was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for—are helping answer long-standing questions in neuroscience, such as how cells communicate with each other, how we sense our body in time and space, how these sensors impact different diseases and more. Three NASA astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut splashed down off the Florida coast early Friday, capping a nearly eight-month science and research mission to the International Space Station.

In this workshop with side coach Aretha Sills open to players of all experience levels, we’ll explore Viola Spolin’s games and exercises that inspire theatrical improvisers to get out of the head and into the present time without any expectation of performing or being “on.” Our goal is to experience the many benefits of spontaneity and group play. Through a combination of meditative warm ups, sensory-awareness exercises, and delightful traditional children’s games, we’ll aim to have fun, release the intuition, and open up new avenues of personal expression. We will (briefly) touch on some of the contemporary brain science that helps us understand why Spolin’s work is so helpful in regulating our nervous systems, and find ways to take her playful methods into our everyday life when we find ourselves under pressure.
