In his doctoral research, Matsuda delved into the conceptual differences of silence in Japanese culture, analyzing its representation in literature and its influence on music. The Japanese language itself offers over seven words to express varying forms of quietness and tranquility, each with unique contextual nuances. This recital invites audiences to experience these dimensions of silence brought to life through music. This recital also serves as the beginning of Matsuda’s 2025 concert season, which will include a solo performance in Tokyo, Japan, on March 12th, 2025, and additional engagements throughout the year. Kosuke Matsuda, originally from Nagasaki, Japan, began his career as a percussionist, deeply inspired by the natural soundscape of his hometown. Matsuda pursued a master’s degree at Aichi University of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies in the United States, earning a second master’s degree and Artist Diploma at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. Currently based in San Diego, he is completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UC San Diego. Join us in the woodshop for this 4-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. Learning how to create pottery reminds us that art is not just about making things beautiful; it’s a way to communicate with the world. This 8-week course teaches us that every piece we make is an opportunity to discover and create within ourselves. Sculptures made of clay have been created since prehistoric times and are still a form of artistic expression today. Artists and artisans around the world practice this art and create human and animal sculptures, geometric objects and shapes, and even create large works of art that tell a story. Sculpture, with a history that goes back centuries, has had a constant presence in the art and culture of different societies. In this 8-class series, students learn to make simple forms and finally proceed to make handmade structures in the shape of plants, animals, and humans. It’s a creative experience that starts from nothing and turns into something meaningful! This course covers the following topics: history of figurative pottery; materials and tools; practical exercises; designing and creating initial forms; creating abstract and organic shapes; understanding the structure of animal bodies and designing facial and body expressions; understanding the structure of human faces and bodies and designing facial and body expressions; and techniques for drying, painting, glazing, and firing clay.
