Over the past decade, artist Math Bass has developed a lexicon of symbols in the series Newz!—letters, bodily forms, architectural fragments, animals, bones—arranged in a variety of scores, each symbol an empty space of meaning, filled in by the context in which it finds itself. Repetition of these symbols, rather than codifying them into one solid signification, exposes the difference at the heart of each iteration; there is always a gap in meaning, something unnamable left out of and left over in the viewer’s reading—a jouissance. It is this gap in the symbolic where Lee Edelman states queerness lies—not as an easily categorized liberal identity but as a process of unmaking and undoing that leaves (gendered) subjectivity as we know it in question. That these symbols are familiar only heightens our unsettling; the negative space of these compositions, a major player in Bass’s practice, adds further to the gap. Outside The Lens (OTL) is calling all young photographers, artists, and filmmakers to participate in Voice Out: A Youth Media Arts Exhibition, OTL’s annual juried art show celebrating youth narratives and their power to transform communities. OTL welcomes submissions from emerging artists ages 8-19 in the categories of photography, mixed media and short video/animation (under 30 seconds) that explore this year’s theme of “Change.” Applicants should submit a brief artist statement and digital file of their artwork between February 17 and March 16 deadline by visiting the “Voice Out” webpage. Save the date for May 3rd, when all entries will be displayed and celebrated at the “Voice Out” exhibition on May 3, 2025. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a nine-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing. Fun and fast-paced, life drawing is a wonderful way to be in the moment. Learn how to draw the human figure, hone your existing skills, and develop some new ones. Each day of camp will include fun activities and artist-instruction at San Diego Craft Collective and Monart School of Art. Save your child’s space today! For 6-8 year olds: Campers will create mixed media drawings and paintings inspired by Spring. We’ll introduce a variety of fundamental drawing techniques, in addition to working with various art mediums! For 9-12 year olds: Campers will learn how to draw realistically, using the Monart method to break all objects down into elements of shape. All skill levels welcome! What will kids learn with San Diego Craft Collective? For 6-8 year olds: Campers will explore Spring-inspired crafts, blending skills and techniques across mediums. With an emphasis on woodworking, campers will create a fun, high-quality craft to take home! For 9-12 year olds: Campers will learn about game making and pinball machine building!
